I am one of those people who has too many ballpens even though I don’t use them all. I also have a lot of unsharpened pencils which are more for display since I don’t want to actually use them. My stationery addict logic is that if I use these pencils, they will not last forever and I will lose their decorative aspect eventually. But this concept for a reimagined pencil just might be a tool that I can actually use since it can last longer.

The Da Vinci Pencil brands itself as “more than just a pencil” as it can also serve as a bookmark when you’re not using it for your original purpose. It is made through advanced 3D printing technology and adapts a minimalist design despite its multi purpose function. What makes it different from other pencils is that it can last longer, for years even, than the usual, traditional pencils that need to be sharpened and will eventually last for just a few weeks if used reguarly.

The nib of the pencil is made from a high-performance metal alloy which can make it last from 7-10 years “under normal conditions”. It is made from PLA-CF (Polylactic Acid with Carbon Fiber) making it strong but lightweight. There is no need to sharpen or refill and lets you write smoothly on the page, similar to the traditional graphite that ordinary pencils use. It is also durable and lightweight and is thin enough that you can use it as a bookmark in your book or notebook without damaging the page. It is also ergonomically shaped so you can grip it naturally while writing.

The minimalist but stylish look of the Da Vinci Pencil makes it premium-looking but the 3D printed aspect will probably not make it that expensive when it will eventually be produced. It is a more eco-friendly alternative to regular and mechanical pencils since it can last longer and doesn’t need any other tools or materials for you to continue using it.

When it comes to stationery, Japan is probably the first country that comes to mind when it comes to popularity and availability (and innovation too!). But Korea is also a pretty underrated country when it comes to this market but we’re slowly seeing some products and creators making a name for themselves. As someone who loves both Korean culture and stationery, this project appeals to me on so many levels.

Seoul My Soul is a project for a stationery merchandise collection that takes its inspiration from different famous landmarks in the South Korean capital. The designs give these iconic and easily recognizable places a modern touch while at the same time making it practical and useful since after all, stationeries are meant to be used. The four places showcased in the collection are Dongdaemun, Jongno, Hangang, and Yongsan. Anyone who has visited Seoul or has watched K-dramas probably know which landmarks are highlighted just looking at these places.

The N Seoul Tower, which offers a panoramic view of the city, is one of the most visited places in the Yongsan district and this TONTI pencil sharpener pays tribute to it. It is not just an actual tool that sharpens your pencil but it is also a desk accessory that serves as a miniature version of this landmark. TADA meanwhile brings a piece of the Han River to your desk through this Hanriver Bridge Tape Dispenser. It pays tribute to the connection that this bridge brings to the city and its people, the same way that a tape can connect one item to another.

One of the things you need to experience when you visit the Jongno district is to catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Gyeongbokgung Palace. You get to see a cultural and ceremonial performance by the guards in red. ISUSI is a more humorous take on this as it’s a toothpick dispenser that holds several pieces when you remove the hat and you can stick one into the guard’s hand. Technically it’s not stationery and more of a kitchen/dining accessory but still it’s cute. Lastly, DIPY is inspired by the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a modern architecture landmark designed by the iconic Zaha Hadid in Seoul. This one is a pen holder that plays with the organic curves and structure of the building. It not only holds your pens but can also hold notes and magnets. If ever I run across these items, I’d probably get them for my desk, even the toothpick holder, just for kicks.

With a life marked by profound introspection and unwavering integrity, his works continue to resonate deeply. In homage to his memory and contributions, the “Poet” smart pen design project was born, a tribute to Yun’s enduring spirit and the value of thoughtful creativity in everyday life.

“Poet” is more than just a tool for writing and drawing; it’s a medium to instill meaning into everyday moments. The design team aimed to embody the warmth and respect symbolized by Dongju Yun’s life, encouraging users to pause and appreciate the significance of time and expression. The pen represents a blend of artistry and utility, mirroring the poet’s ability to weave profound reflections into simple, everyday language.

Although Dongju Yun did not actively participate in Korea’s independence movement, he grappled with deep shame and chose to channel his feelings into poignant self-reflection. His consistent use of the Korean language in all his works, from drafts to published poetry collections, highlights his devotion to his cultural identity. This unwavering integrity influenced the “Poet” design. The handle of the pen, a part held closely by the user’s hand, is crafted with a thicker and sturdier CMF (color, material, and finish) than the upper sections. This deliberate contrast emphasizes strength and resilience, aligning with the poet’s enduring legacy.

The “Poet” pen draws inspiration from five of Dongju Yun’s most iconic works. Each pen’s name, color, and design motifs are based on symbolic elements from these poems. Visualizations of these motifs are engraved on the charger and pen point, subtly embedding the poet’s essence into every interaction. Through this thoughtful integration of color and imagery, “Poet” becomes a tribute to Yun’s artistry.

The design of “Poet” embodies the softness and simplicity characteristic of Dongju Yun’s poetic style. I rarely use measuring tools in my line of work but in some of my creative pursuits like journaling and scrapbooking, it can be useful sometimes. For those that use this kind of tools regularly for work, it can be useful to have something that is all-in-one as it doesn’t slow down the creative or productive process. There are some tools out there that have different kinds of measuring features although they may be a bit bulky and not portable.

The Hanko Ruler is a concept for a “measure anything, with anything” tool. Both the form and function of this device is inspired by the Japanese hanko seal that people use to leave their signature or their mark on a document. Think of this ruler as similar to those correction tapes and glue roller that you slide across the page to use.

This all-in-one measuring tool comes in a portable size that fits in the palm of your hand. You slide it across any surface and it prints scaled marks so you create a ruler wherever you want. It is a compact and minimalist tool that can be used in workshops, studios, offices, and homes by creators, makers, and designers.

It’s a pretty interesting tool that you can carry around and can fit into a pencil case or your pocket. Since it prints on the surface, it’s probably refillable when the ink runs out since the renders show that the tool can be easily assembled and reassembled. I would love to add this to my stationery kit if it can become an actual product someday.
