The dream of commercial supersonic flight has been rekindled as Boom Supersonic’s XB-1 demonstrator aircraft successfully broke the sound barrier at California’s Mojave Air & Space Port. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in aviation design, as it represents the first independently developed supersonic jet in America, breaking away from the traditional government-led development model.

The XB-1’s groundbreaking design incorporates cutting-edge technology that will shape the future of commercial aviation. Its airframe utilizes sophisticated carbon fiber composites, creating a structure that’s both lightweight and robust enough to handle supersonic speeds. This material choice demonstrates how modern manufacturing techniques can overcome historical challenges in supersonic aircraft design.

Chief Test Pilot Tristan Brandenburg guided the aircraft to Mach 1.122 (750 mph) at an altitude of 35,290 feet, showcasing the effectiveness of the plane’s innovative design features. The success validates years of computational fluid dynamics simulations, which allowed engineers to optimize aerodynamics without the massive government budgets previously required for supersonic development.

One of the most innovative design elements is the augmented reality vision system, solving a persistent challenge in supersonic aircraft design. Unlike the Concorde’s complex mechanical solution that moves the plane’s nose out of the way, this digital approach provides pilots with clear runway visibility during takeoff and landing, despite the aircraft’s long nose and high angle of attack.

The XB-1’s engine intake design represents another crucial advancement, efficiently converting supersonic airflow to subsonic speeds for conventional jet engine operation. This technology will be scaled up for Boom’s Overture airliner, which will use the purpose-built Symphony turbofan engine, demonstrating how demonstrator projects can inform larger commercial applications.

The successful test flight program, comprising 11 carefully planned flights, establishes a foundation for Boom’s ambitious Overture airliner. This larger aircraft will carry 64-80 passengers at Mach 1.7, approximately twice the speed of current commercial aircraft, while incorporating lessons learned from the XB-1’s development and testing.

Boom’s approach to sustainable design is evident in its commitment to 100% sustainable aviation fuel compatibility. The company’s new Overture Superfactory in Greensboro, North Carolina, is designed to produce up to 66 aircraft annually, showing how modern manufacturing facilities can scale supersonic aircraft production efficiently.

Talk of omni-directional bikes and James Bruton is the first name that comes to mind. The genius DIYer goes to insane lengths to make sure each of his creations is highly functional. Omni-directional Screw Bike makes our jaws drop, and the Star Wars Speeder Bike made out of hoverboard parts simply made us appreciate James’ craft skills.

The ingenious engineer is back again with another omni-directional bike that self-balances and is capable of driving sideways. Getting started with circus balance balls, he fitted the 2kW ODrive brushless motors (two on each wheel) onto them and complex engineering to make possible a Segway-like balancing act even when driving at acute angles. Therefore, making it the ideal drift bike that anyone even with zero skills can drive sideways!

He calls it the Omni-Directional Ball-Wheeled Bike, virtually employing a self-built power system to actuate the directional movement of the wheels for seamless traction in any direction without any jolts or abrupt directional changes. There is a spirit level to be aware at all times of the angle of motion, especially at higher speeds. A Start button initiates the O drives and an emergency switch freezes the thing in place if you think it’s getting out of control. The balls are free to spin around and a mechanism ensures they move in unison for maximum traction and control. Some parts of the unique two-wheeler are 3D-printed to keep the weight down and maintain structural integrity.

The left-hand twist grip is the steering input to make the wheels spin in either direction, while the right-hand twist grip makes the bike go forward or backward. Tweaking the whole system for a smooth movement without any unnecessary wheel spin, based on the input is something that James handled with maximum conviction. Since there are metal plates on this bike, he made sure to ground the mechanism properly to avoid any shocks when accidentally touching them. After testing the Omni-Directional Ball-Wheeled Bike in his home, he then took it to a large indoor court and immediately found out that at high speeds the plastic balls pop out of their housing.

Riding the bike is going to be a comfortable affair as there is a cushioned saddle on it, and the footpegs provide respite from any building strain in the legs and tights. The centrifugal force wants to push the rider outwards, so the solution is to lean into the turns. That said the omni-directional bike is a creation that would pique the interest of moviemakers.

It’s pretty impressive how much charger designs have changed thanks to the popularity of wireless charging, especially with the introduction of magnetic wireless charging technologies like MagSafe and Qi2. Freed not just from cables but even from horizontally flat surfaces, we’re seeing quite a few interesting designs, from ultra-minimalist metallic stands to nearly invisible wireless chargers embedded in furniture and marble countertops.

With the exception of MagSafe power banks, however, most of these designs are meant to stay in one place only, perhaps even forever, as in the case of furniture. Travel chargers still mostly come in the wired type, mostly because of convenience, but also because very few have made the effort to think outside the box. With the new Global Edition of its 3-in-1 Travel Charging Station, mophie is trying to do just that, offering travelers, adventurers, and mobile workers the same charging convenience they enjoy at home anywhere they go.

The days of thick and rigid wireless charging pads are thankfully over. To truly be travel-friendly, a charging station needs to be compact or at least foldable to a compact size. It shouldn’t be a problem if you only need a single charger for a single device, but as many iPhone owners realize, they also often have an Apple Watch and a pair of AirPods with them as well. There is a growing number of foldable multi-device wireless charging stations in the market today, and mophie is adding a few twists to make its new design a bit more competitive.

For one, unlike its existing 3-in-1 foldable traveling charger, the new mophie Global Edition has a trick that keeps the design even more compact and travel-worthy. Instead of a tri-fold design, it combines the AirPods case charger and the iPhone charger on the same side. The iPhone charger lifts up to reveal the surface for charging the AirPods underneath, but that mechanism has another advantage as well. Since the iPhone is at an angle, you have access to Standby mode, which is perfect when setting the charger on a hotel’s bedside table while you sleep.

As someone who wants to always be early at the airport and do early check-ins, my carry-on luggage and the stuff I bring with me has to be fully functional. I sometimes struggle with accessing things especially when I’m on the go and carrying several things at once. It would be nice to have well-designed luggage that is not just sturdy but also thinks about how people actually use them when at the airport and even on the plane.

The Capsule Luggage is a concept “focusing on the needs of business travel”. The designers looked at the different pain points that travelers encounter like easy access to important things like laptop, rain gear, travel pillows, and even drinks. They made simple tweaks to how the luggage is designed to make things easier as you travel, compared to using backpacks, tote bags, or even the usual luggage.

Based on the product renders, the luggage has a small, easy to open and access compartment where you can place your laptop or tablet. Oftentimes when you’re waiting or when you’re on the flight already, that’s what you reach for first so this is convenient. There’s also a built-in cup holder at the back where you can place your coffee cup or water bottle when you’re going around the airport.

There are no other renders that show the unique features of this concept but it probably has some other things that make it different from the usual. It has “light semantics and a highly recognizable silhouette” and its minimalist design should make it good for both leisure and business travelers.

Those who spend a significant amount of time in cars, whether it’s because their travel time is long or they’re always stuck in traffic jams, are used to doing a lot of things in between driving. If you’re a passenger then you also do a lot of things while you’re in a moving vehicle. There are car trays available to make things a bit stable but it’s not always practical and useful.

Designer: Stupid Technologies

The Stupid Car Try is an accessory for your car that adapts to how people actually use a tray when they’re in their vehicles. It turns your passenger seat into a convenient surface where you can place whatever you need while driving or while a passenger. The legs are just on one end, allowing you to secure it to the seat along with other features that will prevent it from sliding or damaging the seat.

The tray includes a seat anchor to make sure it won’t fall down from the seat while the elastic straps will secure the items you place on top. There are several slots for things like keys, makeup, accessories, phone while the flat surface can be used to place notebooks, tablets, etc. There’s also a cup holder you can attach to it and an open slot to place your phone when you’re charging. There’s even hooks to hang your garbage bag which is needed when there’s a lot of eating going on in the drive.

The car tray is available in different colors: Midnight Mayhem (black), Hot Rod (black with red highlights), Tidal Gray (green with gray highlights), Koala Candy (pink with gray highlights), Dark Moon (gray). The design is pretty well thought of in terms of what people actually use the tray for when in the car.

Segway is well known for its self-balancing micro-mobility commuters but now they are expanding their claws into the e-bike segment too. At Consumer Electronics Show 2025 the company introduced two new e-bikes that are up for pre-order right away with deliveries expected in February. Christened the Xyber and the Xafari, both electric bikes designed to elevate the riding experience with safer, more convenient, and accessible features.

The bikes will come loaded with the Segway Intelligent Ride System and a range of smart tech and features. They’ll automatically shut down AirLock tech in case of theft, and the intelligent lighting system and even fitness data will be synchronized to the accompanying app. Also, the IOT features for remotely controlling the bikes, over-the-air updates and an automatic brightness adjustable TFT display make them a futureproof option.

Xyber is the beefier of the duo with design and performance aesthetics fit for the Cyberpunk universe. The e-bike comes with a 6,000-watt direct-drive motor system touting 175 Nm torque that makes it go from zero to 20 mph in a mere 2.7 seconds. The top speed of 35 mph makes it ideal for riders who crave a lasting adrenalin rush from an e-bike. The motocross-styled bike is going to be as good for dirt trails as it will be for the city thanks to the multi-surface 20 x 5.0-inch rugged terrain tires that are secured against any punctures courtesy of the flat-resistant inserts.

Segway brings the two-wheeler with an optional 2,880Wh dual battery for a range of 112 miles or a single battery that can tick 56 miles on a single charge. In case you run out of battery power there are pedals with 12 levels of assist. The version showcased at the event is in the unclassified segment (not street legal) but the buyable version coming later in spring/early summer 2025 will conform to Class-2 mandates. Xyber will be available in three drive modes – Eco, Sport, and Race – for a price tag of $3,000.

The Xafari is a little toned-down model for urban use with classic cruiser vibes, make no mistake, it still can traverse inhospitable terrain like its big brother. This e-bike comes with an adjustable 2.5 TFT display, seat height, stem, and handlebar for every rider’s comfort, no matter how tall or short they are. It rides on 26 x 3-inch tires and has an adjustable preload suspension with compression dampening and lockout on the fork.

The bike goes from zero to 20 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds which is good enough for city traffic. Xafari gets a removable 936 Kw battery that can be charged at home and on full charge it has a range of 88 miles. City errands are going to be a breeze with the rear-mounted rack and in-frame hardshell. There are also softshell bags for storing groceries or anything else on the go. Xafari coming in three drive settings will have pedal assist and throttle mode only. It is priced at $2,400, with availability set around the same time as Xyber.

There was a time when we were told that the future of deliveries would be made by robots, both flying or rolling. That dream proved to be a little too impractical and not secure to be considered a sustainable model, especially after a few mishaps that befell these unsuspecting machines. That’s not to say that they can’t become a more common sight in the distant future, leaving plenty of opportunities to refine the design of these robots.

Having small robots carrying packages on the street might sound cute until you think about how a fleet of such autonomous machines might seem like a waste of space on roads if that’s the only thing they can do. This concept design tries to add a new angle to this idea, offering a multi-functional robot that can follow you around, deliver your packages, and even transport you to your destination.

Almost like a ride-hailing service, movr has an app that can let you send packages or pick some up, depending on the task you need to accomplish.

Its real magic, however, is in what the robot can do when it’s not transporting objects. movr can also move people around, or at most one person, by transforming into a personal mobility device. Its front extends from its body and the scooter’s handles slide up from the front. The robot’s body then becomes the seat for the lone passenger, carrying the user as well as some of their things from one place to another.

movr is an interesting concept, though it isn’t something that can be easily implemented. Stability, battery life, speed, and intelligence will all be critical factors to consider, and they’re not something that can be easily crammed into a compact design like this. Transforming robots and vehicles, however, has long been a dream of many engineers and designers, so there might come a time in the distant future when movr transforms from idea to reality.

We’ve heard news before that they will soon be releasing a luggage line and now that day is almost here. CASETiFY Travel is their first made-to-order luggage collection and everything you loved about the phone case will also be found here plus a lot of other features that will ensure your luggage is protected and also will hopefully not be mixed with other suitcases in the airport.

The Carry On Roller is the first in the product line made from an ultra-lightweight polycarbonate shell, ball-bearing wheels by Hinomoto and Bounce Bumpers on every corner so it protects it just like your CASETiFY phone case protected your smartphone. It also has aircraft-grade aluminum telescoping handle, puncture-resistant, and of course an AirTag pocket to put your tracker in.
