Benedict Radcliffe has a knack for creating automotive sculptures that can vary in scale from as small as a fifteenth of a size to a real-life version. The London-based artist has been crafting detailed wireframe models of iconic cars for years now, and his craftsmanship has elevated with every build. These car sculptures are focused on the outlines and the core structure of iconic cars, capturing their essence without being bound by the usual conventions of realism. His work often feels like it’s in motion, like the sculptures could jump off their frames at any moment. No wonder my love for Porsche has grown even more after seeing this life-sized creation of Benedict. Last spotted on the streets of Milan, the drive-by-wire sculpture is all set to be a passionate collector’s prized possession for the garage.

The 1:1 scaled version of the widebody Porsche 934 is made out of a 32mm mild steel tube and rides on center-lock BBS wheels with Avon tires. Although the barebones car can’t zip off the starting line, it still leaves an impression on anyone who looks at the thing with its beautiful rear wing. Just like you would transport any sports car in a safe semi-truck, this one too has to be hauled with utmost care. I wish Benedict comes up with the idea of fitting one of these creations with a functional engine and gearbox someday. Of course, for that, he’ll need assistance from some of the acclaimed automotive tuner shop or a creative automotive DIYer!

Designer: Benedict Radcliffe

This wire mesh sculpture is special since the Porsche 934 was a rare racing version of the iconic Porsche 911. The powerful racer based on the Porsche 911 Turbo was prepared specially to comply with the FIA Group 4 rules. Later the lineup was extended with the Porsche 935 which adhered to the Group 5 rules. No doubt, the papaya orange skeletal of this 935 replica is hard to miss in bright sunlight with those split-rim spoked wheels and aerodynamic shape.

Just like his other wireframe sculptures, this one is crafted by bending, shaping, and cutting steel tubes. Each piece of the Porsche 935 sculpture is welded together by hand, making us appreciate the amount of effort put into the build. The iconic rear wing and the aerodynamic proportions of the car are well-emulated in this detailed version. Interestingly the sculpture car is up for auction with the current bid standing at £7,500 at the time of writing. A passionate collector will want this one as a centerpiece of the expansive car collection.

Street Fighter, often hailed as the father of modern fighting games and esports, once ruled neon-lit arcades where lines of eager challengers vied for bragging rights. For me, growing up in the 80s meant falling under its spell at age 13, back when quarters vanished fast as I honed my reflexes and memorized combos. Iconic Arcade, with backing from Medion AG—a Lenovo company recognized for its strengths in gaming and computing—is inviting fans to relive those glory days by launching the Street Fighter XXL Arcade Machine at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.

Designer: Iconic Arcade

This 9/10 scale stand-up cabinet captures the vibe of a classic arcade unit without dominating your rec room. Pre-orders are live at major retailers for $699, and deliveries are slated to begin in Q2 2025. Two distinct variants, the Street Fighter II The World Warrior XXL Arcade Machine and the Street Fighter Alpha 2 XXL Arcade Machine, honor the 90s arcade craze with updated features for an era that thrives on online connectivity. The release also features a collaboration of several entities, including Eldohm, Media1UP, and Arcade PR, all working closely to blend classic gaming with modern technology.

Iconic Arcade focuses on authenticity and performance, which is why the Street Fighter XXL Arcade Machine is powered by a Raspberry Pi 5 sporting a 2.4 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 processor. The cabinet stands about five feet seven inches tall, weighs around 90 pounds, and measures 67 by 23 by 28. The 19-inch BOE monitor delivers vivid colors and crisp animations across 14 official Capcom titles, including Street Fighter II The World Warrior, Street Fighter II Champion Edition, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting, Hyper Street Fighter II The Anniversary Edition, Street Fighter Zero, Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha, Street Fighter Zero 3, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike Fight for the Future, Giga Wing 2, Final Fight, Knights of the Round, Progear Storm of Progia, and 1944 The Loop Master. Real arcade-feel controls use Happ-style joysticks and Sanwa-style buttons, so fireballs and spin kicks are intuitive whether you’re a returning pro or a fresh recruit.

Online multiplayer and leaderboards bring a dose of community rivalry, letting you face off against friends or take on complete strangers who appreciate Capcom classics. The cabinet is equipped with HDMI Out, making it simple to record matches or stream them live for an audience, which is perfect for content creators and esports enthusiasts. A lit marquee and glowing faux coin door provide the nostalgia factor, and an adjustable volume control and headphone jack cater to nights when you want to keep the noise down. Assembly is straightforward, and you can set it up in the afternoon.

Design Elements

The two distinct designs—the Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and Street Fighter Alpha 2 cabinets—each bring their own flair, rooted in nostalgia while making bold visual statements. The World Warrior edition sports a gritty black-and-yellow theme that perfectly encapsulates the hard-hitting vibe of the original arcade. Its side panel features Ryu in a dynamic fighting stance, with bold yellow text slashing across the cabinet’s side. This textured design reflects the rugged and competitive spirit of the era, with details like the Capcom USA logo adding a nod to its heritage.

The Alpha 2 edition takes a different approach, opting for a sleek blue gradient backdrop with key characters from the Alpha series depicted in striking artwork. The gradient blends seamlessly with vibrant colors, offering a more modernized but equally nostalgic aesthetic. The side panels feature intricate art of Ryu and Akuma facing off, bringing the Alpha series’ storyline and rivalries to life. This cabinet’s smoother design cues cater to those who appreciate a refined touch, while still evoking arcade memories.

Both cabinets share rad physical features, including a glowing faux coin door that recreates the feel of old-school arcades and an illuminated marquee that grabs attention in any room. The control decks are designed with a metallic diamond plate finish, giving a tactile and industrial feel that’s reminiscent of classic arcade builds. These details totally amp up the look but also reinforce the durability and authenticity of the experience. Whether you’re drawn to the grit of the World Warrior edition or the polish of the Alpha 2 cabinet, each design tells its own story while staying true to the spirit of Street Fighter.

Medion AG’s role as the driving force behind Iconic Arcade adds an extra layer of credibility for anyone familiar with its track record in consumer tech. The German manufacturer has been part of Lenovo’s global family since 2011, and it’s using that expertise to reimagine home arcade systems that balance iconic styling with modern-day performance. The brand also plans to unveil additional licenses and classic titles over the year, backed by partnerships with other leading publishers and franchises. When Q2 2025 rolls around, the cabinet should be ready to unleash old-school rivalries in living rooms everywhere, standing as a retro centerpiece that merges the electricity of 90s arcades with the advantages of contemporary technology.

People either really love or really hate kombucha, depending on how you feel about its unusual tart taste. One of the by-products of the industry is SCOBY or symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, which is actually the starter culture that brews this fermented drink. But the material can also be used to make other things and these designers had a pretty interesting way of using this biomaterial for another context.

Designers: Nishtha Luhadia, Aditi Shinde

Luminous Lore is an installation that shows off Tholu Bommalata, a shadow puppet theatre tradition of the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. But instead of the usual materials used to create the puppets, normally goat, deer, or buffalo hide, it uses leather made from fermenting tea, sugar, water, vinegar, and of course SCOBY.

The leather forms a large Tholu Bommalata inspired lamp and the play of light on the surface helps tell the story and the audience is engaged on a sensory level. The hand-painted illustrations on the lamp also tells the story of how the SCOBY leather came to be. This is not just something you watch though as the audience is invited to touch and feel it.

The designers hope that the success and interest in the exhibit could pave the way for more biomaterials to be used in other projects and products in the industrial design world. With the way that this biomaterial can be grown in any size and shape just by adding some other ingredients, the future is bright.

]]>

The Tesla Cybertruck has always been a magnet for both innovation and intrigue, but the latest third-party modification takes its futuristic aura to another level—a $10,000 solar panel wrap that adds more range. While Tesla itself teased the idea of a solar-powered Cybertruck, this bold move by California-based Sunflare Solar gives the concept a tangible form. But the question lingers: is this ambitious wrap the leap forward it claims to be, or just an expensive novelty?

To understand the appeal, let’s revisit Tesla’s early flirtations with solar integration. Back in 2017, Elon Musk floated the idea of equipping the Model 3 with solar cells, though the technology then was deemed impractical. Fast forward a few years, and solar cell efficiency has improved significantly, with Tesla channeling its expertise into products like solar roof tiles. Musk reignited excitement in 2019 by announcing the Cybertruck would feature a solar roof capable of adding up to 15 miles of range daily. However, this feature never materialized (like a lot of Musk’s promises), leaving enthusiasts to wonder what could have been. Enter Sunflare Solar, which decided to fill that gap with its own cutting-edge solution.

Designer: Sunflare Solar

Showcased at CES 2025, Sunflare Solar’s flexible panels adhere seamlessly to the Cybertruck’s flat, angular surfaces, generating up to 1.5 kW of power. This translates into roughly the same 15-mile daily range Musk once envisioned for Tesla’s solar roof. The package includes a 5 kW battery inverter to channel that energy back into the truck, theoretically making off-grid adventures a bit more self-sustaining. On paper, the concept is undeniably cool—a rugged electric vehicle gaining autonomy with renewable energy. But let’s peel back the shiny layer and assess the trade-offs.

One of the Cybertruck’s hallmark features is its stainless steel exterior, celebrated for its durability and carefree resistance to scratches. The solar wrap, while innovative, swaps this resilience for fragility. Solar panels, even flexible ones, aren’t impervious to the rigors of outdoor wear and tear. Off-road trips, harsh weather, and everyday debris could all pose risks to these expensive cells, raising doubts about their long-term viability. Practicality becomes a sticking point when you consider the original ethos of the Cybertruck: an indestructible utility vehicle.

Moreover, the inherent limitations of car-mounted solar panels can’t be ignored. Despite advancements, the energy yield from panels covering a vehicle’s surface area remains modest. The 15 miles of extra range might be enticing for niche scenarios, like remote camping or commuting in sunny regions, but it’s far from game-changing. For most drivers, the added utility may not justify the hefty price tag—especially when home-based solar systems provide a far more efficient alternative.

And yet, there’s an undeniable allure to the concept. The visual impact of a Cybertruck cloaked in solar cells is enough to turn heads, and the idea of harnessing the sun’s power on the go taps into our collective fascination with sustainability and innovation. After all, it’s a lot better than a gold Cybertruck or one with Trump’s face painted on it.

This leaves us in a familiar place with Tesla and its ecosystem: balancing groundbreaking ideas with real-world usability. The Cybertruck itself is no stranger to polarizing opinions, and this solar wrap continues that tradition. Whether it’s a fleeting trend or a glimpse into the future, one thing is clear—it keeps the Cybertruck in the spotlight, sparking discussions that blend tech, design, and sustainability.

For now, the $10,000 question looms: is this the dawn of a new era for solar-powered vehicles, or just a shiny experiment destined for a niche audience? Time, and miles, will tell.

]]>

You walk into CES and you’ll probably see more chips, gadgets, microprocessors, and tech you’ve ever seen in your life. Amidst this forest of plastic, metal, and silicone, I managed to spot a bit of greenery and obviously I stopped dead in my tracks. You see, I’m a bit of a gardener myself, having grown tomatoes, lemons, basil, mint, sunflowers, bell peppers, and now even peas and chillis. I recently invested in a hydroponic tower, that grows plants without soil, instead using only water. The obvious benefit of a hydroponic tower is that it’s compact, efficient, fast, and resists plant infections because bugs only thrive in soil.

On the floor at CES I saw the Gardyn, a ‘hybridponic’ tower that also adds AI to the mix, giving you a plant tower that’s smart enough to grow itself rather than involving you with the nitty-gritty details. Powered by two cameras that point directly at the plants while they grow, the Gardyn automatically adjusts lighting and water distribution to its plants, leveraging the power of artificial intelligence to essentially ‘hack’ nature into growing at its fastest pace. What you’re then left with is a kitchen garden that consistently provides you with fresh produce, while you essentially do the bare minimum.

Designer: Gardyn

The Gardyn is almost like your standard hydroponic tower. It comes with a water reservoir at the bottom, and a vertical channel that houses the plants. Water travels from the bottom to the top, raining down on the pods which contain the seeds. Eventually, once the plant grows, the roots get watered occasionally, and nutrients in the water help the plant grow without any soil. The Gardyn comes with sunlight-mimicking light towers too, which switch on or off automatically in line with the circadian rhythm. A camera on the light rod monitors the plants 24*7, getting a sense of how the plants are doing while informing the AI of the plants’ needs and their progress.

Kelby, the Gardyn’s AI assistant, watches over your plants with more dedication than most babysitters. Through a built-in camera and sensors, Kelby knows exactly when to water, how to distribute nutrients, and even which plants are thriving or struggling. My favorite detail? It compiles a time-lapse of your plants growing, which feels like a small nod to the magic of nature even as technology orchestrates the whole thing.

Here’s where things truly get interesting. The Gardyn’s ‘hybridponic’ tower uses machine learning to develop faster ways to grow better plants, but it doesn’t do so in an isolated manner. It works alongside thousands of other Gardyn devices, operating like a hive mind where each machine shares information to help all the Gardyn devices perform better. If a certain watering schedule benefits Kale more, the camera will record the evidence and that Gardyn will ‘teach’ other Gardyns to water kale in the most hyper-optimized way.

What you essentially have to do is just add these readymade pods into your Gardyn. Gardyn provides pre-seeded pods called yCubes, which eliminate the fiddly, messy step of sprouting seedlings elsewhere. If you’ve ever wrestled with rock wool and seed trays, this feels like skipping to dessert without eating your vegetables. Just plug the pods into the Gardyn, fill the water tank, and let the system do its thing. A unique code allows the Gardyn to know which seeds are inside the pod, so the tower essentially has a record of what plants you’re growing. The machine circulates water at just the right intervals, using 95% less than traditional gardening. Yes, you still have to refill the tank now and then, but that’s about as demanding as it gets.

The yCubes come in multiple packs, and you can simply install them into the Gardyn when you want to grow a new plant. Some plants (like spinach for example) have a finite life, which means they either die or become unsuitable for consumption. When your plant reaches that stage, all you do is pull the old yCube out and add a new one. The Gardyn identifies that a new pod has been added to the tower and optimizes light and watering to the tower accordingly.

The beauty of this device lies in two things – firstly, seeing an AI basically turn into an expert horticulturist and farmer, growing your own kitchen garden for you, and secondly, having access to an app that doesn’t just give you all the info you need, but also lets you view a time-lapse of your garden, seeing plants grow from saplings to proper flora in a 10-second clip that’s perfect for the ‘gram.

Gardyn’s team also really emphasized how having and AI basically grow your produce for you really helps you understand how good vegetables can taste. Apparently, the apple you eat today was probably harvested months ago and stored in a deep freezer so it could be transported across the globe. Unless you buy food from a farmer’s market, the food you’re buying is easily weeks or months old, and are made to artificially ripen using certain chemicals. When you grow your food AT HOME, you’re getting the freshest produce ever, and that can have a remarkable effect not just on cost, but also on taste. Lettuce tastes better, tomatoes are sweeter, jalapenos tangier, etc.

And all this can basically exist in a tiny area, giving you an entire farm in the floor-space of essentially a doormat. The Gardyn is compact and vertical, taking up just two square feet of floor space, but it can grow up to 30 plants—plenty for herbs, greens, or even bigger crops like tomatoes and eggplants. For smaller households or limited spaces, there’s a version with fewer slots. Either way, you’re growing a jungle in a corner. A jungle that’s self-growing, self-sustaining, and human-nourishing!

I Can’t Stop Thinking About Lenovo’s Brilliant Modular Mouse Concept at CES 2025

]]>

You go to a tech expo like CES expecting to be absolutely wowed by phones, laptops, GPUs, cars, and all sorts of prominent product categories. I went to CES 2025 and was wowed by a mouse… yes, a wireless mouse that connects to your computer. Designed by the folks at Lenovo, the AdaptX Mouse easily impressed me as one of the most audaciously creative ideas ever brought to life.

Designed to be modular, portable, and flat-packable all at the same time, the AdaptX Mouse comes in multiple parts that snap together to make the mouse of your dreams. You’ve got one half that has the buttons and wheels, and the other half that forms the rear of the mouse. Snap two halves to make the mouse you need – an ergonomic rear for a grippy mouse, a flat rear for a portable mouse, or even rotate the flat rear 180° to get the mouse propped up at an angle for a more grip-friendly experience. It’s just the kind of project I’d expect to see from a budding designer on Behance… except, this was from Lenovo – it was real, it worked, and it was flawlessly clever.

Designer: Lenovo

This is the AdaptX Mouse POC from Lenovo – the POC stands for Proof Of Concept, which means that as much as I rave about how clever its design is, there’s a fair chance it won’t ever launch. I spoke to the folks at Lenovo and coaxed them for a price and launch date, but their answer was firm – they were merely gauging public interest and showcasing their design and tech abilities. The AdaptX isn’t on the launch schedule any time soon, and might just never launch if Lenovo doesn’t believe it’s worth it. I’m here to say that it is.

What’s so wonderful about the mouse is that it has the demeanor of a chameleon, shapeshifting to suit your needs. The mouse itself is a two-piece unit. The actual mouse is just the front half, with buttons, a scroll wheel, and an optical sensor. The rear, however, completes the mouse’s avatar, giving it body – quite literally. The front and rear are designed to snap together at will, and Lenovo basically built an ecosystem around this snapping action.

The most basic avatar of the mouse is shown above, with its simple, angled design that makes it perfect to grip while still keeping it sleek. Look at the mouse and you intuitively know that the crease running along that angle means the front and rear halves can be separated. Pull them apart and your mind instinctively tells you to rotate the rear 180°. Join the mouse back together and it goes from being the angled grippy peripheral to a slick, flat mouse that hugs the floor, like the one shown below.

Lenovo could have left things like that, just making a mouse that’s sleek, magnetic, and easy to travel with – but they went one step ahead by building out as many accessories as they possibly could, making the mouse more versatile and useful than you would ever expect.

What you see above are the AdaptX’s multiple modules that let your mouse be much more than its most basic self. Sure, it’s sleek when you want something sleek – but what if you want something ergonomic? What if you want a mouse that also has extra features like a USB hub, or a mouse with double the battery life? Lenovo’s modules for the AdaptX just give the average wireless mouse superpowers, all packaged into a gorgeously foolproof system that turns your cursor-manipulating device into something overwhelmingly more useful.

There are four broad rear modules to choose from – one ergonomic module, and three sleek modules that all hide extra features. The ergonomic module is simply a hollow plastic shell that snaps to the front half, giving you a mouse that feels a lot more traditional as it embraces the natural curves of your palm… but that’s almost every regular mouse.

The three sleeker modules are exactly the same in form, but all have different functions. One serves as a power bank that charges the mouse but can also charge your phone, another stores small cards like SD cards, MicroSDs, SIM cards, TF cards, etc. and a final slim module doubles as a USB-C hub with a USB-A and HDMI input for your computer. Use the modules with the mouse, or detach them to use them independently as their own separate peripherals.

For now, the AdaptX has no specifics. It has no battery level, no DPI, no power bank battery capacity, no price, or no launch date. Logitech decided to keep this just as a concept, but honestly, it’s the one device I kept gravitating to at their showcase (and mind you, they were showcasing a rollable laptop too).

The reason why the AdaptX still occupies space in my brain is because it’s so simple, so clever, yet such an unexplored concept. Mice have stayed the same for years, whether they’re made for desk-use or for travel. The AdaptX challenges both the function as well as the form of the conventional mouse, allowing it to do everything while still being fairly user-friendly and intuitive. And that’s what is so remarkable about it – the fact that the AdaptX is so brilliantly creative in its design, while still sticking to the ‘form follows function’ theme that makes it every user’s dream mouse. All I hope, is that Lenovo doesn’t let this mouse remain a dream…

It started with turntables and instant cameras, but the retro craze eventually hit the video games industry. Then again, many gamers had a soft spot for old-school 8-bit and 16-bit games, but things really heated up when the likes of Nintendo jumped on the nostalgia train with an official mini NES/Famicom recreation. Since then, many brands have tried to join the party and launched various retro consoles, many of which were portable only in size.

A few retro game lovers made a name for themselves in designing actually playable portable retro consoles. My Arcade is one of the most prolific among these, having teamed up with the big names like Atari, Bandai Namco, CAPCOM, and more. At CES 2025, it showed off one of its latest masterpieces that fused handheld gaming consoles and Atari’s iconic design language in a rather unique and interesting design.

Designer: My Arcade

Handheld gaming is becoming big again, now that major PC makers and processor manufacturers have joined the fray. At first glance, you could almost presume that the Atari Gamestation Go is yet another money-grab attempt, but closer inspection reveals a very different spin on that design. Unlike the Gamestation Retro Go that it also announced at CES this week, the Atari Gamestation Go has the clear markings of an Atari-centric gaming machine that only Atari fans will be able to discern. Most gamers, however, will definitely notice this isn’t your average handheld console.

The controls are quite different from the standard, at least aside from the customary D-pad, four face buttons, shoulders, and triggers. There’s a knob at the top on the left side, what Atari fans call the “paddle,” a clear reference to Pong and Arkanoid, two games that are best played by turning a dial to move, well, the paddle. At the bottom left is something you’ll probably never see on any other handheld: a trackball. Or as Atari branded it, “Trak-Ball.” Titles like Centipede are said to feel more natural with such a control, versus your typical joystick or, worse, directional buttons.

On the opposite side lies the most unconventional control for a gaming handheld, though. There’s a full numeric keypad, but it’s not for crunching numbers. A few Atari games actually used such an unusual interaction method, cementing the Gamestation Go’s image as something designed for true-blooded Atari fans. With that many controls to choose from, which ones should you use for which games? That’s where My Arcade’s “SmartGlow” technology comes in, visibly highlighting the applicable controls for the game that’s currently running.

It may be running old-school games, but the Atari Gamestation Go definitely has plenty of modern amenities such as HDMI for video out and USB-C ports for external controllers. It’s 7-inch screen is intentionally large to support Atari: Recharged games, adding to the massive library for more than 200 officially licensed games built-in. This is clearly an Atari lover’s dream come true, and it could be theirs for only $149.99 by the time it rolls out into the market by the third quarter of this year.

Kosé has been recognized as a 2025 Honoree in the XR Technologies & Accessories category at this year’s CES event in Las Vegas for its Mixed Reality Makeup – 0 min try-on studio. This innovation from the J-beauty leader offers ‘an entirely new makeup try-on experience’ utilizing cutting-edge high-speed projection mapping technology. The new makeup simulation system will replicate the color and texture of makeup on the skin in a way that AR simply cannot.

According to CES, the system enables customers to experiment with numerous makeup designs in a true 3D environment, allowing them to select products more swiftly and with greater confidence compared to traditional try-on methods or AR makeup filters. Thus, it is a worthy honoree.

Designer: Kosé Corporation

This innovative Mixed-Reality Makeup (MR Makeup) Color Machine utilizes high-speed projection mapping technology, which Yoshihiro Watanabe Laboratory of the Tokyo Institute of Technology developed. This technology allows makeup to be projected on the face. “MR Makeup allows the makeup to smoothly follow the human body’s movements and changes at the facial expression. The high-speed face recognition and projection technology, updated 1000 times per second, completes the process from facial movement to MR Makeup projection with a few milliseconds delay or less,” said the corporation.

What makes it even more interesting is that since it is a projection, it can be adapted to any section or shape. The makeup can be easily changed or worked over without actually having to remove it. This is a boon, especially if you’re someone who always messes up their eyeliner and needs to remove and re-apply it all the time! The high-speed projection mapping is paired perfectly with the color correction tech to create a realistic makeup simulation in no time. “By combining these, we have succeeded in developing an immersive makeup simulator that can achieve a natural finish that looks like you are actually applying makeup, even on a moving face,” said Kosé.

The final result is seamless and wonderful, beating the AR-enabled virtual makeup try-on applications we often find on smartphones and smart mirrors. It reproduces natural colors and textures that AR cannot hope to replicate. Since the colors are directly projected onto the skin, the makeup is realistic, perfectly adapting to the person’s skin tone. AR filters cannot achieve this realism. Kosé believes this makes the MR Makeup Color Machine quite versatile in its potential. They believe it can be used beyond makeup and cosmetics. They say shortly, everyone should be able to try their makeup anytime and anywhere – that is their goal.

The MR Makeup technology has been showcased at CES 2025, allowing visitors to try the one-of-a-kind makeup service. It is designed to encourage personalized self-expression and offer potential for entertainment applications. Check it out if you’re attending CES this year!

Rugged construction ensures the Handsfree 1 is ready for the elements, and the thoughtfully organized compartments are perfect for cameras, laptops, and gear. Whether you’re trekking through remote trails or setting up a makeshift workstation in the wild, this backpack is a game-changer for off-grid living with zero compromises.

BLUETTI Apex 300 Portable Power Station

Charging an electric vehicle, running heavy-duty equipment, or keeping a household powered during an outage—BLUETTI’s Apex 300 portable power station handles it all without breaking a sweat. With an unmatched capacity of up to 58kWh and a peak output of 11.52kW, it’s a game-changer for those who refuse to compromise on energy independence. Ingenious toaster-like device can charge your phone in just two seconds

It’s 2025 and we’re still charging phones the same way as a decade ago. Yes, we now have magnetic wireless charging technology, but the process is practically still the same. We connect our smartphones to an external object, be it an actual charger or power bank, with or without cables, and wait for our phones to fully charge. We’ve become so accustomed to that system that we barely question now whether it couldn’t be better.

Fortunately, someone did question that “reality,” leading to what could be one of the oddest yet also most ingenious phone chargers to pop into the scene, almost literally. Yes, it does look like a toaster, and yes, you do insert your phone into a slot and some toaster-like actions happen inside. But if the technology and the design ever mature and become stable, it could change the way we think about phone chargers and batteries for good.

Designer: Swippitt

OK, your phone doesn’t literally charge in around two seconds. Swippitt basically wraps your iPhone in a case called the “Swippitt Link” that has a battery inside that keeps your phone topped up all the time. That part isn’t exactly new, with the likes of Mophie cornering that market almost a decade ago. What’s new is that the extra battery is replaceable, and you don’t even have to do it yourself.

What you do is dip half the phone, encased in the Swippitt Link, of course, inside the Swippitt Hub, and wait for a few seconds for the mechanism inside to push out the dying battery pack and slide a fresh one in. The Hub has room for up to five of these batteries so, presuming there’s one always near you, you practically have zero downtime charging your phone or charging the battery that charges your phone.

Admittedly, the appeal of Swippitt won’t be immediately evident to most people, but those with multiple people inside a single household might appreciate it. It means family members, especially kids, can quickly get their phone “charged” before they step out the door, giving parents some peace of mind. Of course, there’s also an app that lets you monitor the charging status of the batteries inside the Hub as well as how many times it swapped them out.

Just with battery cases, the biggest obstacle to the mass adoption of such a system is that the Swippitt Link has to be designed for each and every supported phone model. At the moment, that’s only the iPhone 14, 15, and 16 series, with Samsung Galaxy flagships being added later this year. Less popular models probably have little hope of being invited to the party unless Swippitt designs a universal case that will work based on phone sizes, not models. There’s also the rather steep price tag of $450 for the toaster Hub and $120 for the Link, prices that could eventually go down if the technology gets adopted more widely.
