Any bookworm worth their…well, book…has probably experienced this at one point or another, probably when they were kids. Your parents or guardians have turned the lights off because it’s bedtime already. But you know you can’t put your book down because you can’t wait until morning to find out what happened. So you dive under the covers and use a flashlight to continue reading until the wee hours of the morning. Of course that doesn’t do wonders for your eyesight, but what’s a bookworm to do?

Designer: Onurhan Demir

Good thing we now have some solutions that can help bookworms out. Or at least, we have some concepts that can make it easier. This is a concept for a 2 in 1 lighting design. It is a rechargeable flashlight that can also become a reading lamp that you can use when you want to finish reading a book in the dark. Unlike regular flashlights which can be a bit inconvenient as you’re holding a book and turning the page, this one makes it easier as you can clip it to your book. Hopefully the clip can also hold on to thick books, which some bookworms prefer reading sometimes.

When in its flashlight mode, it looks like a regular flashlight with its spherical body. It seems a bit small though so I don’t know if it’s something that can be used for a long time. When you want to use it as a reading lamp, you just flip open the clip underneath and then attach it to your book and continue reading even if you don’t have the main lights on or if you don’t have a desk reading lamp. The product renders show different colors like gray, white, and orange, with the gray one also having orange highlights. Again, we don’t know how long the rechargeable light will last, so maybe your thick book will not be finished in one sitting.

Now I don’t know if the reading lamp function has something that will not damage your eyes so much, as this is still a concept. It would be nice to have that feature though, especially if they’re targeting readers. I mean, most heavy readers develop bad eyesight eventually, so tools like this should not exacerbate our already burdened eyes. But at least, this concept will help free our hands when holding a book, especially if we’re still reading under the covers.

There are times you don’t need an intricately designed light source to illuminate your surroundings or to add a certain flair to your space. Sometimes you just need a well-thought of kind of lamp that is simple and minimalistic but can also meet your functional needs. Designers take their inspiration from a variety of things but this new and unconventional lamp is inspired by a mundane thing: the store sign.

Designer: Amber Dewaele

The Flat Light is exactly what its name says. It is housed in a thin, flat rectangular form that uses stainless steel and acrylic materials. The light flows through the edges so you can expect just a subtle glow to add to the atmosphere or to the aesthetic of your space. Since it has a compact shape, it can fit into narrow spaces and can also become a wall-mounted light.

The light comes in two kinds of finishes. The brushed finish has a more fine texture and gives you a semi-matte surface. The polished finish meanwhile has a double purpose since it can also act as a mirror to reflect on your surroundings. It is not wireless though so you still have to place it somewhere that has a nearby power source.

It’s an interesting kind of lamp that acts more like part of your furniture or surroundings rather than a full on light source. It will fit perfectly on your dresser, make-up space, bookshelf, picture shelf, and other places where you may need some small source of light, with a minimalist but fashionable twist.

Emerging lighting studio Kawabi, based in New York, has solidified its place in the design world by joining Colony, the renowned Tribeca gallery championing independent talent. Co-founded by Irisa Na and Aaron Kawabi, the studio crafts handmade-to-order lighting fixtures described as “vessels of illumination.” These creations draw from ancestral forms and rituals, merging historical inspiration with modern aesthetics. To mark this collaboration, Colony is showcasing Kawabi’s debut collections: the Souvenir Collection, the Legume Series, and the Cascade Pendant.

Designer: Kawabi

Kawabi’s Souvenir Collection conveys a minimalist elegance steeped in symbolism, with shades crafted from pleated kozo paper supported by sleek architectural frames. Evoking the imagery of gateways and portals, the designs explore the spiritual resonance of objects as beacons of light and meaning. Inspired by a traditional paper lantern encountered in San Francisco’s Chinatown, the collection integrates East Asian lantern-making techniques into a contemporary framework.

The Souvenir Table Lamp and Souvenir Floor Lamp stand out as testaments to Kawabi’s refined artistry. The table lamp, with its precision-folded kozo paper shade and warm walnut base, evokes a sense of quiet reverence, as though illuminating a shrine to modern simplicity. Meanwhile, the floor lamp elevates functionality to art. Its live-edge wood cross beam lends a tactile authenticity, while a suspended brass pendulum touch switch adds an unexpected interplay of elegance and utility. Together, the pieces transform light into a spiritual centerpiece, seamlessly marrying ancient symbolism with modern refinement.

The Legume Lamp is a heartfelt homage to the rituals of offering and remembrance. Its form, reminiscent of a seed pod, encapsulates themes of renewal and legacy. The lamp’s organic curves, coupled with a base inspired by ceremonial offering trays, blend practicality with a sense of sacred ritual.

Crafted from white oak, kozo paper, and rattan, the Legume Lamp seems to glow with its own inner life. It bridges the tactile warmth of natural materials with an emotional resonance rooted in tradition. The lamp not only lights a room but also invites reflection, becoming a quiet monument to familial connections and cultural heritage.

Drawing from the graceful asymmetry of kengai bonsai arrangements, the Cascade Pendant integrates the beauty of organic motion into its sculptural form. The fixture’s alternating shapes evoke flowing branches, creating a dynamic composition that offers a new perspective from every angle.

Made from white oak, kozo paper, and rattan, the Cascade Pendant achieves harmony between material and concept. The natural grain of the wood complements the soft translucence of the paper, while the suspended elements seem to float, as if caught in an eternal downward drift. The design transforms light into a living element, inviting viewers to interact with its evolving interplay of shadow and illumination.

For Kawabi, light is more than a tool; it is an experience of connection. The studio’s founders have expressed that their first collaboration on a lighting piece revealed light as the perfect medium for evoking resonance and harmony. This ethos permeates every fixture, crafted with the intention of creating meaningful and attuned spaces.

Colony’s founder, Jean Lin, highlighted the studio’s ability to blend traditional Asian iconography with modern sensibilities, describing their work as both contemporary and deeply rooted. She emphasized Kawabi’s unique voice in the design landscape, anticipating the resonance it would bring to new audiences.

Kawabi’s debut at Colony is more than an introduction, it is a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship, and modern design. Through the interplay of ancestral narratives and contemporary innovation, their lighting pieces illuminate more than just physical spaces. Each fixture carries a story, inviting viewers to experience light as a bridge between past and present. Visitors to Colony’s Tribeca gallery are welcomed into this luminous dialogue, where the traditional and the contemporary merge in harmony.

One of my goals this 2025 is to read more books. Since I read all over my apartment, it would be nice to have a light source that can go with me whether I’m in my living room, work space, or bedroom. Right now, I rely on my regular fluorescent light everywhere else and a small lamp set up on my bedside table. But a lamp I can bring with me anywhere would be more convenient if I wanted to read in the dark.

Designers: Shelley Simpson and Zachary Hanna for Mud Australia

The Pop Lamp is a portable and rechargeable LED lamp that is completely wireless and can be placed anywhere you would need a light source. It is made from just one piece of handmade porcelain and inside that minimalist body, there is a concealed internal dimmable LED light source. The lamp can last up to 6 hours without charging if used at 100% brightness and up to 96 hours on the lowest brightness.

The lamp has a cylindrical body with a slight protruding shade. The metal plate on top is where you have your touch controls. One tap will turn the lamp on while pressing and holding will turn it off. You can swipe your finger onto the plate to adjust the dimness and brightness of the lamp.

The Pop Lamp is available in six colors which are the signature of Mud Australia: Blossom, Duck Egg, Dust, Orange, Red, and Slate. Each piece, measuring at 13 x 8 x 24.5 cm is handmade in their studio in Sidney and is carbon neutral. It can be used anywhere indoors and should not be left “unsupervised” outdoors or in wet areas.

The Spiral Lamp, a creation born of innovative thinking and reverence for everyday design, is a striking example of how simplicity and creativity can elevate modern lighting. This hanging pendant lamp is more than a mere light source; it is an artistic exploration of assembly, modularity, and the understated elegance of everyday materials.

At the heart of the Spiral Lamp lies a simple yet ingenious construction. The lamp’s power cable is not just a means of delivering electricity, it also serves as the primary structural element. Binding the outer shade and internal tube together, the cable eliminates the need for fixings, screws, or adhesives. This unique design choice allows for effortless assembly and disassembly, making the lamp not only repairable but also highly customizable. Whether for residential or commercial spaces, the Spiral Lamp can adapt in size, color, and finish to suit any environment.

Designer: BLOND LTD

The Spiral Lamp’s main body is crafted from a laser-cut aluminum tube and pressed sheet metal, showcasing a thoughtful balance between durability and simplicity. These materials can be easily adjusted in length to cater to different applications, from high ceilings in commercial spaces to cozy living rooms. This straightforward manufacturing process ensures cost-efficiency and scalability, making the Spiral Lamp a prime candidate for large-scale production and potential expansion into a cohesive family of lighting products.

The design of the Spiral Lamp finds its roots in BLOND Artefacts, an internal studio initiative dedicated to drawing inspiration from offline, real-world objects that have faded from mainstream production. The studio’s extensive archive of artifacts includes forgotten treasures from charity shops, attics, and even street finds. The inspiration for the Spiral Lamp specifically came from a vintage timber basket, whose structural integrity was achieved by weaving rope through flat timber sheets. This clever use of material informed the Spiral Lamp’s playful construction, transforming a practical concept into an elegant design statement.

The BLOND Artefacts initiative culminated in the BLOND LABORATORY exhibition during Milan Design Week 2024, where the Spiral Lamp was proudly showcased. The exhibition celebrated the creative potential of overlooked objects, breathing new life into traditional construction techniques and celebrating low-tech ingenuity.

The Spiral Lamp’s aesthetic is both iconic and understated. Its silhouette echoes the vintage timber basket that inspired its design, with the cable wrapping tonally matched components into a unified whole. The interplay between the internal tube and external shade highlights the elegance of the cable’s dual role as both a structural and functional element. This seamless integration of form and construction pays homage to the design’s origins while offering a fresh perspective on contemporary lighting.

In the Spiral Lamp, every element respects and complements the other. The cable suspends, powers, and binds the lamp into a single harmonious object, subtly celebrating its often-overlooked structural capabilities. This approach transforms a mundane element into a central feature, blending humor with practicality in a design that is as thoughtful as it is beautiful.

The Spiral Lamp is a testament to BLOND’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the enduring relevance of everyday design. By embracing simple materials, playful construction methods, and inspiration from the past, it offers a fresh, adaptable, and scalable lighting solution for the modern world.

LG Multifunctional 3-in-1 Projector is also a Mood Floor Lamp and a Speaker

Home projectors are becoming popular as more people not only cut the cord but also ditch large screens that take up space on their walls. But while laser projectors offer the flexibility of setting up your viewing experience on any flat surface, including your ceiling, they also have their fair share of obtrusive designs. The larger kind tends to stay at a fixed spot in the middle of the room, while ultra-short-throw or UST projectors require that you have a shelf next to a wall.

But what if the projector could be disguised as something you might already have inside a room? And what if it can serve some other function when it’s not in use as a projector? These musings might have been the impetus behind LG’s unusual yet also ingenious design, melding not just two but three functions in one, disguising a home projector as a lamp that sets the mood and an odd-looking wireless speaker, helping homeowners save space without looking out of place in your living space.

Designer: LG

To be fair, a home projector these days usually comes with a built-in speaker, so that 2-in-1 functionality might not sound that special. Then again, most of the time you can’t use that speaker independently without the projector, giving this combination of three devices in a single design a unique and unmatched value. Even better, that design blends seamlessly into your room’s decor, and you wouldn’t guess it to be anything other than a lamp until you start using its other functions.

The LG PF600U definitely looks like your typical floor lamp with a stand-pole design, albeit one with an unusual circle for its head. The lamp actually shines most of its light from the back, and it can show off nine colors in five different levels of brightness. That head, however, can be tilted at 110 degrees, allowing you to set the mood you want in the area you want.

The real surprise happens when you tilt that head up with its side facing forward, revealing the projector that hides within. With a resolution of 1920×1080 and a lamp with 300 ANSI lumens of brightness, the projector can theoretically perform well in a dark room. The cone that makes up the bulk of the head’s shape also houses the stereo speakers with passive radiators completing the trio, offering a versatile set of functions for whatever entertainment or mood you need.

Granted, combining all those functions into a single, space-efficient design might mean compromising on some performance, especially on the projector side. To satisfy more discerning consumers, LG is also launching what it claims to be the smallest 4K UST (ultra-short throw) projector that also minimizes its footprint and presence in your home. With a minimalist metallic finish, the LG CineBeam S (PU615U) also tries to blend with your decor, looking like a nondescript metal box sitting in the middle of your shelf.

Handheld vacuum concept doubles as mood lighting and an ikebana vase for your desk

]]>

Small living spaces don’t just have a problem with furniture but also with fitting small objects on or around those furniture. That’s why multi-functional or modular products are quite popular among people living in small apartments or single-person households, allowing them to combine multiple functions in the space of a single physical object. Not all combinations make sense, though, but it might just be a matter of making an appealing composition or selling the idea.

This odd yet pleasing concept design, for example, might look like a decorative object, but it is actually a handheld vacuum cleaner in disguise. Actually, it’s a discreet mood lamp to adorn your desk and create the ambiance you want. Actually, it can also be a makeshift Ikebana vase that holds a single, delicate flower stem. Actually, it’s all three, and it pulls off this rather unusual mishmash of functions without losing sight of its true purpose: bringing value to the owner’s life even in such a small space.

Designer: Seunghyeon Kim (Focus Studio)

A vacuum cleaner is not something you’d immediately associate with having an aesthetic charm, yet the Budding design concept really tries to bridge those two incongruent ideas using some nature-inspired explorations. Like a sprout that curves as it grows, this design object also curls and rises from its base in an elegant and smooth manner. That alone gives it some decorative value, but its worth extends to its practical uses.

That vertical part of the tube is supposed to be a handheld vacuum cleaner, not unlike those rather basic and cheap simulacra you’d see in online shops. This hides such a technical and utilitarian product in plain sight, though how obvious it is as a vacuum cleaner will probably depend on how well you’ll be able to clean it after each use. The concept is also designed to make it easy to take the cylindrical vacuum cleaner apart to replace its filter when needed.

The base of the object serves as a fixed front-facing mood light, whose gentle glow is supposed to, well, set the mood. It’s not strong enough to provide any kind of serious illumination, nor is its low angle conducive for that purpose. The design doesn’t indicate if the light’s hue or intensity can be changed, as some people might not always appreciate a warm yellowish glow.

Although it’s not a formal vase of any sort, Budding’s curved form makes it possible to prop up a single flower stem to some artistic effect. It’s a fitting image to the design’s sprout metaphor, though its minimalist aesthetic does limit the kind of flowers that go perfectly with it. Even without this aspect, however, having two functions hiding inside a decorative object is more than enough to endear it to people living in small spaces with simpler needs and simple tastes.

The space-time continuum has long fascinated people with even a mild interest in how the universe works. Even though I don’t always understand it, I love watching movies that play around with this concept, like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Interstellar, Edge of Tomorrow, and other movies that explore time travel. It can also be applied to other things aside from pop culture or at least it can inspire designs for furniture, accessories, etc.

Designer: Michael Jantzen

The Space-Time Transformation Lamp is one such product inspired by this concept that illustrates the idea of an object moving through, well, space and time. The basic design is actually a modular kit that you can assemble yourself so you can change the size, shape, color, and even intensity of the lamp. Parts are made from laser cut painted birch plywood but you can also request for other materials if you want it to be customized.

Each of the frames for the lamp are slightly rotated, multiplied 10 times and then glued together. Some of the frames are attached in different directions to the centre cube while the top frame is removable, providing access to the light bulb inside. The center is enclosed with translucent white plastic with the small light bulb in the middle.

Because of the lamp’s structure, the concentration of the lamp is thrown out in different directions, therefore giving off the space-time continuum effect. It’s more of an aesthetic kind of lighting since the light is scattered and not totally functional, but it is an interesting piece nonetheless.

Power strips or extension cords are no longer foreign sights in public spaces and homes. It’s almost as if the architecture of buildings and houses hasn’t caught up with modern times, neglecting the growing need for accessible power outlets. Then again, some establishments intentionally limit those sources of power as deterrents to loitering and lounging that deprive customers of space and businesses of added income.

As common as they may be, the design of power strips hasn’t exactly changed that much over the past years. Aside from designs that include individual switches and fuses per socket, the dominant power strip design has remained the same uninspiring white box as it has been for decades. It is useful but not particularly pleasing. This concept design tries to give the power strip a facelift to turn it into a simple yet eye-catching display that makes every use feel more alive and engaging.

These days, there are many “modern” designs that try to inject a bit of life into gadgets and appliances by adding AI and displays to their feature lists. While those definitely upgrade the experience, they are not the only methods available to change the formula. There are plenty of other ways to make a design look more interesting, one that doesn’t need anything more than a play of light and shadow.

The Lightbox Power Strip, as the name pretty much states, is a combination of a three-socket power strip and a small lightbox. The idea is pretty simple, with the box providing not only power but also a pleasant sight that contrasts with the potential mess of cables coming out from the top of the rather large box. That source of fun and entertainment comes from the light shining inside and out through translucent plates that give character to an otherwise boring piece of equipment.

The translucent plate with prints and stickers slides in and out of the body, hiding behind a ridged plastic surface that adds visual texture to the design. A knob on top of the box controls the light color and intensity, allowing the owner to mix and match images and colors to their whims. It’s a simple, low-tech design that adds a bit of vibrancy to a mundane object that we use almost mindlessly every day.

Having only three sockets is admittedly a bit limiting, even with USB ports on the side. The bulk of the Lightbox Power Strip also makes it impossible to carry around with you, limiting its use to your house or semi-permanent locations. Nevertheless, it could be a source of attraction and interest, further fanning the flames of power outlet wars.
