This Ultra-Thin Speaker Disguises Itself as Decor—But Its Sound Will Surprise You

Speakers have long been a compromise between function and form. They need to sound good, but they also take up space, often standing out as clunky, boxy contraptions in an otherwise well-designed room. This speaker, however, rewrites that equation entirely. Instead of a traditional box with drivers and grilles, it transforms its entire front surface into a vibrating diaphragm, producing sound in a way that feels almost magical. The result? A speaker that’s not just slim—it’s practically a piece of art.

The illusion that the DIYR speaker creates is that at first glance, you wouldn’t even guess it’s a speaker. Its ultra-thin profile makes it look more like a decorative panel or divider than an audio device, and that’s precisely the point. It can be propped against a wall, used to divide spaces, or simply be placed somewhere as an accent piece, all while filling the space with rich, immersive sound. The fact that it doesn’t rely on conventional speaker cones means it disperses audio more evenly, avoiding that directional, pinpointed effect most traditional speakers create. Instead of sound coming from one focused area, it radiates across the entire surface, creating an almost ethereal listening experience.

Designer: DIYR.DEV

You’d expect the DIYR speaker to come from a predominantly tech company, but their ethos is more around build-it-yourself decor and lifestyle tech. DIYR, also the company behind this innovation, is all about modular, easy-to-assemble products that encourage a hands-on approach. You won’t find an over-complicated mess of wires and screws here. Instead, it comes together intuitively, making the act of putting it together feel like part of the experience rather than a chore. That said, this isn’t just an exercise in aesthetic minimalism—it’s a serious piece of audio tech.

Underneath the sleek design, the speaker boasts high-quality engineering for optimal sound reproduction. Traditional speakers rely on cones that push air in a focused direction, but this one uses exciters attached to a flat panel, turning the entire surface into a sound source. The technology isn’t entirely new—flat-panel speakers have existed in various forms—but few have executed it with this level of refinement. The result is a sound profile that’s not just immersive but also uniquely diffused, almost as if the music is emanating from the air itself rather than a specific point in the room.

The speaker is powered by a 40W amplifier, ensuring strong, clear output despite its slim profile. The frequency response ranges from 40Hz to 20kHz, covering a full spectrum from deep bass to crisp highs. Unlike traditional speakers that rely on forward-facing drivers, this one disperses sound in a more even manner, making it ideal for both near-field listening and filling an entire room with audio.

Connectivity is as modern as the design itself. The DIYR Speaker supports Bluetooth 5.1 for seamless wireless streaming and also includes a 3.5mm auxiliary input for wired connections. Powering this device is a 7,200mAh rechargeable battery, giving it an impressive 10-hour playback time on a single charge. This means you can move it freely around your space without worrying about cables or power outlets, making it as versatile as it is stylish.

The DIYR Speaker arrives entirely flat-packed, so you get to put it together as a part of the experience. Just the act of assembly gives you a very clear understanding and appreciation of exactly how unique the thing is. I’ve covered tech for 10 years – I’ve never ‘assembled’ a speaker, so the idea of doing so with a flat-panel speaker isn’t just refreshing, it’s entirely new. The process isn’t difficult – The speaker’s panel is actually a 4mm-thick cardboard membrane (making it easy to source, budget-friendly, and recyclable) that you cut out. After that, you simply follow the guide and snap the exciters to the left and right sides of the panel, with the wires leading to the processor which mounts on a pole that holds the panel up.

You’re probably wondering whether a cardboard panel does a good job of producing music, and it’s something the DIYR folks point out too, researching a variety of materials before zeroing on the cardboard panel for its budget-friendliness as well as its ability to produce great sound. Plus, cardboard is easy to print on too, which means the DIYR speaker can come in a variety of gorgeous patterns, designs, gradients, and color variants, blending into your space seamlessly as haute decor.

This kind of innovation hints at a broader shift in product design—one where technology dissolves into living spaces rather than disrupting them. So for those tired of conventional speaker design, this is a glimpse into the future. A future where sound isn’t confined to a black box, but instead radiates from a surface as thin as a canvas. Where technology isn’t something you have to accommodate, but something that seamlessly integrates into your space. It’s rare to find a speaker that excites both audiophiles and design enthusiasts in equal measure, but this one does exactly that—without compromise.

Nike 24.7 Marks the Biggest Shift in the Brand’s Performance Wear Yet

Nike is introducing the 24.7 collection as a defining moment in its approach to athleisure, positioning it as a step forward in the evolution of performance-driven lifestyle wear that merges comfort, versatility, and contemporary fashion. The sportswear giant is shifting gears, moving beyond performance-driven apparel and moving into a more refined approach to athleisure. With consumers demanding more from their wardrobes, Nike’s answer is a lineup that blends technical innovation with everyday style.

Designer: Nike

Nike

Unlike past releases that leaned into high-energy branding and performance-driven marketing, 24.7 adopts a more sophisticated direction, focusing on subtlety and versatility in its design language. The pieces are made to be worn beyond the gym, on the move, at work, or even while winding down. It is a calculated shift, signaling that Nike sees the future of sportswear as something that seamlessly integrates into daily life. And if I am being honest, I do not understand why it took Nike so long to recognize this shift. Athleisure has been evolving for years, with brands refining the intersection of sport and lifestyle, yet Nike—arguably the most influential force in the industry—has only now begun fully embracing this transition.

The Design Philosophy Behind 24.7

At first glance, the 24.7 collection doesn’t immediately resemble what many have come to expect from Nike. The oversized swooshes, aggressive graphics, and high-contrast designs that have defined many of the brand’s past collections are noticeably absent, signaling a shift in aesthetic direction. Instead, the collection embraces minimalism, tonal branding, and subtle details that feel more at home in a high-end boutique than a sports store.

This departure from traditional Nike aesthetics is not incidental but a deliberate choice to align with a more polished and adaptable approach to performance-driven fashion. The locker-loop details, internal heat-pressed tags featuring Nike’s Total Orange stripe, and muted color palette reference the brand’s deep-rooted history in sportswear while signaling a refined aesthetic.

Nike

From my perspective, this shift is a long-overdue evolution in Nike’s approach to sportswear. The emphasis on structured silhouettes, refined materials, and tonal branding marks a significant departure from the brand’s past reliance on bold graphics and oversized logos. This shift highlights the versatility Nike is pushing with 24.7, proving that performance apparel can be understated yet impactful.

These pieces aren’t confined to performance wear, nor are they purely casual. They are designed to exist in a space where movement and sophistication come together effortlessly, allowing wearers to transition through different parts of their day without compromise. The adaptability of these garments is what sets them apart, ensuring that they feel just as natural in an active setting as they do in a social or professional environment.

Nike

Nike has taken a distinct step away from its historically bold branding, opting instead for subtle imprints like the tonal Nike 24.7 logo discreetly placed on garments such as chinos. This minimalist approach speaks to the collection’s refined direction, proving that performance apparel does not need to rely on loud graphics or oversized logos to make an impact. The confidence of the design lies in its restraint.

Versatility is the priority, with structured silhouettes that emphasize precision in tailoring rather than attention-grabbing branding. This shift mirrors the rise of “quiet luxury” in fashion, where understated design and premium materials work together to create apparel meant to be worn throughout the entire day without feeling out of place in any scenario.

Fabric Innovation and Market Positioning

Nike isn’t solely relying on design to distinguish this collection, as fabric innovation plays an equally significant role in defining the overall experience of wearing these garments. The introduction of ImpossiblySoft and PerfectStretch materials marks a leap into premium technical wear.

Nike

  • ImpossiblySoft: A Spacer-knit fabric with four-way stretch designed to feel effortless on the skin while maintaining structure. Found in the collection’s crewnecks, joggers, and half-zips, it creates a balance between softness and function.
  • PerfectStretch: A tailored fabric engineered for movement. Used in pleated skirts, wide-leg pants, and woven shirts, it brings a refined look to traditionally sporty pieces.

Both materials use Nike’s signature Dri-FIT technology, which helps regulate moisture and temperature, ensuring that comfort and performance go hand in hand. This pairing allows the garments to maintain breathability and sweat-wicking properties while ensuring an elevated look that doesn’t compromise on mobility. Sweat-wicking, breathable, and adaptive—these fabrics allow 24.7 to blur the line between performance gear and premium leisurewear.

Nike

Nike’s messaging surrounding the 24.7 collection is carefully crafted to reflect a broader lifestyle shift. The phrase ‘From sport to life, from mindset to movement’ encapsulates the idea that athletic wear is no longer just about training or competing but is instead becoming an integral part of daily wardrobes for individuals who prioritize both performance and personal style.

Nike

The decision to feature British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith in the campaign reinforces the collection’s emphasis on adaptability. She describes the fabrics as soft and luxurious, praising the tonal branding for its refined aesthetic. For her, the pieces in this collection stand out because they seamlessly blend performance and style in a way that feels natural and effortless. Whether she’s training, traveling, or making public appearances, she needs apparel that adapts. That’s the exact ethos Nike is building into 24.7.

Nike isn’t the first brand to embrace the concept of elevated athleisure, as the market has already been shaped by key players who have blurred the line between functional sportswear and high-end fashion. Brands like Lululemon have long merged performance and luxury, while Represent has pushed technical apparel into the premium space. Even luxury fashion houses have started experimenting with sport-inspired silhouettes.

Nike

What sets Nike apart is its deep-rooted performance credibility. While other brands focus on aesthetics first, Nike builds from function. 24.7 is a response to shifting consumer expectations—clothes need to perform, but they also need to look good outside of the gym.

What This Means for Nike’s Future

Nike’s introduction of the 24.7 collection signals a long-term commitment to reshaping its approach to lifestyle and performance apparel. It hints at a broader evolution in the brand’s approach to apparel. If this collection gains traction, we could see Nike doubling down on technical lifestyle wear and expanding its Sportswear line with even more refined offerings.

Nike

That raises a few questions. Will Nike lean further into high-end athleisure? Could we see collaborations that push this aesthetic even further? More importantly, will consumers embrace this understated approach, or will they still gravitate towards Nike’s more traditional bold branding?

One thing is clear: 24.7 marks a new direction for Nike. Whether it’s a turning point or just a strategic play remains to be seen, but the brand is making it clear—performance and style no longer exist in separate lanes.

Think sound absorption/dampening and you automatically think of materials like foam, cardboard, cloth, egg-holder trays. A designer is encouraging us to think outside the box – or rather, outside the ball. Designed by Mathilde Wittock of MWO Design, Soundbounce takes discarded tennis balls and transforms them into a material that’s not just sustainable but visually and texturally delightful. It’s sustainability turned into functional art—making you rethink how something as humble as a tennis ball can turn into the ultimate sound-absorbing material.

Soundbounce begins with used tennis balls, remnants of matches and memories, once destined for the landfill. The world produces 330 million tennis balls each year – once they serve their purpose, the balls are discarded, taking over 400 years to decompose. Instead of becoming planet Earth’s problem, Wittock reimagines these balls into a material that retains their essence—soft yet durable, lightweight yet strong. You can almost sense the energy of their previous life in the surface of this material, now transformed into something tactile and inviting.

Designer: Mathilde Wittock

The texture of Soundbounce is immediately captivating. Soft and slightly springy, it’s reminiscent of the original ball yet feels entirely new. This is the kind of surface that invites interaction—it’s warm to the touch, with a playfulness that balances its eco-conscious origins. Its imperfections aren’t flaws; they’re subtle reminders of the material’s journey, adding depth and intrigue to its appearance. Moreover, rather than being just visual, this decorative material is textural and tactile too, involving more senses in the user experience. Heck, it might just smell like a fresh tennis ball too!

Visually, the material has a velvety quality that feels unexpected for something made from recycled rubber. Its aesthetic is versatile, making it a compelling choice for a variety of applications. Picture it as upholstery on modern furniture, lending softness and personality to a space. Or imagine it as part of a design accent—perhaps an acoustic panel, a room divider, or even a pet bed. The tactile and visual appeal makes Soundbounce both approachable and elegant, capable of elevating any setting it’s introduced into.

Sustainability in design often comes with compromises. The raw, industrial look of recycled materials can sometimes overshadow their function, leaving them appreciated more for their message than their form. Soundbounce avoids that pitfall, showing that recycled materials can be both thoughtfully sustainable and visually refined. Its texture and color feel purposeful, celebrating its origins without overwhelming the final design. The balls also come in a variety of natural colors, with designer Mathilde Wittock also customizing the balls with RAL colors upon request – making it perfect for billboards, corporate installations, or other large-scale branding projects.

Its playful roots add another layer of charm. There’s something undeniably cheerful about its tennis ball heritage—a connection to sport, movement, and energy that carries over into the material. That lighthearted quality makes Soundbounce adaptable. Whether in a sleek interior, a casual workspace, or a child’s playroom, it has a way of blending in while adding its own story to the mix. Besides, the name Soundbounce perfectly captures the material’s history (bouncy tennis balls) but simultaneously feels like a playful taunt given that this new material doesn’t bounce sound – in fact, it absorbs it!

Pet owners, in particular, might find Soundbounce especially charming. Its soft, textured surface feels fantastic to the touch—perfect for a pet bed or a chew-resistant toy. After all, what better way to give your furry friend a slice of luxury while being kind to the planet? It’s as if Soundbounce is naturally tailored for the kind of practical, playful designs pets (and their humans) adore.

Soundbounce is a versatile material that lends itself to a range of applications, from furniture and interior design to fashion accessories and pet products. Its soft, tactile surface makes it ideal for upholstery, adding both comfort and visual appeal to chairs, cushions, and benches. Designers can also use it for accent pieces like lampshades or wall panels, where its textured finish becomes a focal point. Beyond aesthetics, Soundbounce delivers a significant sustainable impact. Each square meter incorporates approximately 283 upcycled tennis balls, preventing them from entering landfills and repurposing the equivalent of 8.5 kg of CO2. By transforming waste into a functional, beautiful material, Soundbounce champions a circular approach to design, reducing environmental harm while creating meaningful products.

The Top 10 Retro Design Elements to Add Nostalgia to Modern Products

]]>

As we start with a new era, Generation Alpha, a millennial such as me seeks comfort in the nostalgic touch of retro design. Retro for me is the era of rebellion, polka prints, Andy Warhol and the comfort of knobs and tactile interfaces over touch screens. Retro design effortlessly blends nostalgic elements with modern aesthetics, creating a refreshing yet familiar atmosphere. Inspired by vintage styles from the 1950s to the 1980s, it fosters comfort and a connection to history.

By using iconic shapes, vibrant colors, and distinctive materials, retro design reconnects us with cultural references and pays homage to the past. This approach not only produces timeless pieces that resonate across generations but also enriches our contemporary experience. Let’s dive into the elements of retro design we can use to add to touch of nostalgia to our modern product design and some examples that show how brands are incorporating this trend seamlessly into their work.

1. Bold Color Palette

Retro design thrives on the use of bold colors to evoke a sense of nostalgia and vibrancy. Drawing inspiration from the vivid palettes of the 1950s to the 1980s, it incorporates hues like mustard yellow, teal, burnt orange, and avocado green. These striking colors are often used in combination to create eye-catching contrasts that capture attention and energize spaces. Whether applied to furniture, textiles, or accessories, bold colors in retro design serve to highlight iconic shapes and patterns, making each piece a statement of personality and style. This dynamic use of color bridges past and present, creating timeless appeal.

The Analogue Pocket Classic brings a vibrant twist to retro gaming with its striking palette of bold colors, including indigo, red, green, blue, yellow, pink, orange, and silver, all meticulously color-matched to the original Game Boy Color. This sleek product has a playful aesthetic that appeals to gamers of all ages, making it a standout piece in any collection. Perfectly blending vintage charm with contemporary flair, the Classic edition is a colorful celebration of gaming history.

Serhan Yenilmez’s “Cat Eye” glasses draw inspiration from the iconic cat-shaped ‘librarian’ frames of the ’50s and ’60s. Featuring added layers for a bold, chunky look, these glasses blend classic elegance with modern sophistication through details like leather pads and mix-and-match materials. All parts of the glasses are designed to be detachable, allowing for customizable styles to suit the wearer’s preferences, imparting a distinct appearance. Go from sleek to chunky, to attention grabbing prints to a minimal tone – it’s all upto your customization for that day.

2. Large Prints

The retro era is vividly remembered for its bold prints, florals, and striking motifs, which became hallmarks of the time. These design elements were ubiquitous, gracing everything from home interiors to fashion. Bold prints, often featuring geometric shapes and vibrant colors, captured the spirit of innovation and optimism.

Florals, with their oversized blooms and lush patterns, added a touch of nature-inspired elegance and whimsy. Striking motifs, such as paisleys and abstract designs, reflected the era’s experimental and free-spirited ethos. Together, these elements created a visually dynamic aesthetic that was both expressive and timeless, leaving a lasting impact on design history.

During the mid-20th century, such designs adorned everything from wallpaper and upholstery to fashion and accessories, infusing spaces and wardrobes with a lively, playful energy. The use of large prints in retro design not only adds a touch of whimsy but also emphasizes the era’s experimental spirit. These bold patterns continue to inspire modern design, blending past influences with contemporary tastes. Big geometric patterns provide a sense of familiarity and nostalgia. The combination of bold colors and geometric prints is essential to retro design, making a vibrant statement that speaks volumes.

3. Iconic Motifs

Iconic motifs like polka dots played a significant role in defining retro design, adding a playful and timeless charm to various elements of style. Originating in the mid-20th century, polka dots became synonymous with the era’s fashion, appearing on dresses, accessories, and home decor. Their simple yet bold pattern, often featuring evenly spaced dots on contrasting backgrounds, created a lively visual appeal that resonated with the era’s spirit of fun and creativity. Polka dots brought a sense of whimsy and lightheartedness, making them a favorite choice for those looking to infuse their spaces and wardrobes with a touch of retro flair.

The use of bold, large polka dot prints in vibrant colors to upholster this armchair infuses it with old-world charm and nostalgia. It is characterized by evenly spaced, small, medium, or large circular shapes placed on a contrasting background to make them stand out. This striking contrast enhances its visual appeal and evokes a sense of timeless elegance. Whether polka dots are used in clothing, accessories, or home decor, their simple yet bold pattern infuses a sense of vintage charm and nostalgia.

The polka print of this sofa chair is a statement piece, with polka’s ruling the retro era. The polka also brings to mind iconic designers like Yayoi Kusama who have elevated the use of this humble pattern to a whole new level, amplifying its cult status. Adding such a print to your room makes it a eye-catcher and a discussion starter for fellow retro-lovers.

4. Classic Typography

Typography during the retro era was characterized by bold, expressive fonts that mirrored the dynamic cultural shifts of the time. From the elegant serifs of the 1950s to the psychedelic scripts of the 1960s and the chunky, geometric typefaces of the 1970s, each style reflected the prevailing aesthetic trends and societal mood. Retro typography was not just functional but also an art form, used extensively in advertising, posters, and packaging to capture attention and convey messages with flair. Its impact is enduring, as these distinctive fonts continue to influence modern design even today.

The Semetor K8 CD player captures the charm of retro design with its playful aesthetic, featuring classic typewriter-inspired fonts on its translucent buttons. This adorable player pays homage to 1950s European appliances, boasting an open top that lets you watch the CD spin, reminiscent of vinyl on a gramophone. It combines vintage style with modern features, including Bluetooth connectivity, an FM radio, and a warm ambient lamp, making it a delightful addition to any space. The K8 beautifully merges nostalgic typography with contemporary functionality, perfect for late-night listening sessions.

This concept design reimagines the classic beeper as a modern power bank, seamlessly blending retro design with contemporary functionality. Embracing the nostalgic aesthetic, it features a translucent shell and vibrant colors, along with a minimalist interface that includes few chunky buttons. This playful nod to the past not only enhances usability but also appeals to younger generations who may be unfamiliar with traditional pagers, celebrating the charm of retro design in a modern context.

5. Natural Wood

Natural wood played a pivotal role in retro design, infusing spaces with warmth and authenticity. During the mid-20th century, wood was a favored material for its versatility and timeless appeal. Iconic furniture pieces, like those from the Scandinavian and Mid-Century Modern movements, showcased clean lines and organic forms, highlighting the beauty of natural grains and finishes. Wood paneling was also popular in interiors, adding texture and depth to walls and ceilings. This emphasis on natural materials reflected a desire to bring the outdoors in, creating harmonious environments.

Embracing the retro revival, the Retio is an all-in-one radio, Bluetooth speaker, and clock that harmonizes nostalgic design with modern technology. Handcrafted in California, it features a walnut wood body that highlights the timeless appeal of wood in retro aesthetics, complemented by brass accents and stunning vintage Nixie tubes. Retio supports Bluetooth 5.0 and boasts a powerful 10W Class-D amplifier for exceptional sound quality, offering up to six hours of playback on a 6800mAh battery. Each unit is unique, celebrating the beauty of natural wood while delivering contemporary functionality, making it a perfect embodiment of retro design.

6. Plush Fabrics

Plush fabrics were integral to achieving the cozy, inviting ambiance characteristic of the retro aesthetic. Velvet, chenille, and corduroy were popular choices, adding texture and a sense of luxury to furniture and decor. Upholstered sofas, armchairs, and drapery in plush fabrics not only provided comfort but also contributed to the visual warmth of a space. The tactile quality of these fabrics invited relaxation and social interaction, embodying the retro focus on creating welcoming, lived-in environments that are both stylish and functional.

The Easy Yukata is a stunning Japanese garment that simplifies tradition with its innovative “hook and loop” fastener system. Made from 100% breathable cotton and featuring a durable polyester obi, the Easy Yukata combines the ease of a bathrobe with the elegance of a kimono. Its traditional design incorporates soft, plush fabrics that invite comfort, allowing one to enjoy the beauty of Japanese culture with every wear.

7. Product Packaging

Patterns and prints in packaging are key elements that emphasize retro designs, evoking nostalgia and capturing the essence of bygone eras. During the retro period, packaging often featured bold geometric shapes, whimsical illustrations, and vibrant color palettes, creating eye-catching and memorable visuals. These designs were not just about aesthetics; they also conveyed the product’s identity and brand story in an era when consumer culture was booming.

Stripes, polka dots, checkered patterns and stylized florals were commonly used to create a distinctive look that stood out on store shelves. Today, these retro-inspired packaging designs continue to appeal to consumers by offering a sense of familiarity and charm, bridging the gap between past and present while celebrating the timeless appeal of vintage aesthetics. These cake boxes showcase a timeless black-and-white pattern that adds an old-world charm to the Christmas festival. It is perfect for presenting your festive cakes and the simplicity of black and white allows the patterns to stand out without the complexity of bright and contrasting colors.

8. Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship is integral to retro-inspired design, celebrating the meticulous attention to detail and artisanal techniques of past eras. This focus on quality and authenticity is evident in the careful selection of materials and the skilled work that goes into each piece. Lighting, furniture and accessories incorporate hand-blown work on materials such as glass, metalwork and more, adding unique character. This emphasis on craftsmanship honors traditional methods and connects us to the past, ensuring that retro-inspired creations are both timeless and enduring, appealing to those who value history and innovation.

Bomma beautifully connects retro aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship in their glass crystal light fixtures, reviving the classic Czechoslovakian glassmaking heritage. Each piece reflects a whimsical elegance, inspired by natural forms while embracing the charm of bygone eras. With a series of collections, Bomma showcases the artistry of hand-blown glass, ensuring each item is a unique work of art. Collaborating with sister brand Rückl, the Metamorphosis collection merges exquisite hand-cut crystal with innovative lighting designs, embodying the timeless beauty of craftsmanship and the beauty of retro design.

9. Cultural Relevance

Retro design holds significant cultural relevance and evokes a deep sense of nostalgia, as it captures the essence of past eras that many people cherish. By incorporating elements from the 1950s to the 1980s, retro design taps into collective memories, reminding us of iconic styles and trends that shaped those decades. This design approach resonates with those who experienced these eras firsthand and appeals to younger generations intrigued by vintage aesthetics. Ultimately, retro design bridges the past and present, offering a comforting familiarity and timeless appeal.

The Sukhtara is a modern reinterpretation of the Ektara, a string instrument from East India with origins over a thousand years old. While the Ektara has remained largely unchanged since its emergence between 1700 B.C. and the 7th century C.E., Arnab Patra, an Indian design student, has updated its structure to revitalize this classic instrument for contemporary use. Retaining its retro wooden build, the Sukhtara is crafted from a coconut or gourd shell, bamboo, metal strings, wood, and goatskin, elegantly blending traditional craftsmanship with a fresh, modern approach that celebrates its rich heritage.

10. Vintage Design

Retro and vintage design, while often used interchangeably, have distinct characteristics that set them apart. Retro design refers to the revival or imitation of styles from the past, particularly those from the mid-20th century, like the 1950s to the 1980s. In contrast, vintage design involves original items or styles from a specific time period, typically over 20 years old. Vintage pieces carry the authenticity and history of their era, often showcasing aged materials and craftsmanship. While both evoke nostalgia, retro is a reinterpretation, whereas vintage is a preservation of the past.

The Nikon Zf seamlessly blends retro design with modern performance, evoking the classic SLR aesthetics of Nikon’s early cameras through its sleek all-black body, brass dials, and leatherette covering. Featuring a 24MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor and an advanced Expeed 7 processor, it excels in subject recognition and autofocus. The Zf delivers stunning images with precise color accuracy, 8-stop in-body image stabilization, and 4K video recording, making it a versatile choice for photographers who appreciate the charm of vintage design alongside contemporary functionality.

This innovative camping lantern concept reimagines traditional gas lanterns, bringing retro design into the modern era with rechargeable LEDs instead of hazardous fuels. Inspired by historical aesthetics, it features a modular candle design that can be stacked for increased brightness or used independently for a softer glow. Both the light tubes and candles emit a warm yellow light, evoking a nostalgic ambiance perfect for reading. Along with this, the lantern’s battery can charge other devices, making it a versatile companion for outdoor adventures while celebrating the charm of classic design under the stars.

Together, these elements create products that celebrate history while remaining relevant in today’s design landscape.

If you’re a part of the food industry in any measure, you’ve probably been seeing red the past few days, literally and figuratively. The FDA’s recent decision to ban Red Dye No. 3 from food products has stirred significant attention, precisely because of how its eye-catching red hue has long been a staple in various products. Globally, many countries have already restricted Red Dye No. 3, making the FDA’s move a belated but still noteworthy shift that’s now rocking a lot of people’s boats.

Although the FDA’s decision underscores the importance of consumer safety and the need for regulatory bodies to respond to scientific findings, its implications extend beyond the food industry. Designers, particularly those in the food and packaging sectors, must navigate these changes and explore alternative solutions that maintain visual appeal without compromising safety.

The Scarlet Enigma: Understanding Red Dye No. 3

Red Dye No. 3, also known as erythrosine in some countries, is a synthetic dye cherished for its vibrant cherry-red color. For decades, it has been a key ingredient in processed foods, baked goods, and certain medications. Its ability to enhance visual appeal has made it a valuable tool for food designers.

The FDA’s decision to ban this dye was driven by studies since the 80s linking it to cancer development in rats. But while there is still some debate on its impact on humans, the “Delaney Clause” in U.S. law is unambiguous. The US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act prohibits any additives found to cause cancer in humans or animals, not necessarily both.

Despite these findings, the dye continued to be used due to industry pressure and its widespread adoption. Even stranger, the dye was already banned from use in cosmetics and topical or topical drugs in 1990 for the exact same reason. Since it was approved for use in food and medicine in 1907, Red Dye No. 3 has established itself as one of the standards for this bright red color, making any prohibition potentially disruptive to multiple industries.

That said, the US is actually playing catch up to some extent, as other countries have already either banned the same synthetic dye or have limited its use significantly. The gap, which was partly due to industry lobbying, highlights the challenges in balancing consumer safety with industry demands. As a result, designers must now adapt to this change and seek alternative solutions that meet both aesthetic and safety standards.

A Spectrum of Impact: Red Dye No. 3’s Reach

Red Dye No. 3’s reach extends to a myriad of products, which is part of the reason for the buzz around this prohibition. Many of the bright red colors you see from processed food make use of it, from the expected like gummy bears and frosting to the unexpected such as saffron rice, vegetarian meat alternatives, and instant mashed potatoes. Its surprising presence in medicines, including chewable vitamins and cough syrups, underscores its extensive application.

Designer: HAM

The ban presents a significant challenge for the young food design industry which now needs to find a new way to paint the town red, so to speak, without this commodity. Food design, a sub-discipline that focuses on creating new food products, staging and presenting dishes, and designing packaging, will have to look elsewhere for a kind of red that will preserve that visual appeal without compromising safety. Also potentially affected is the budding 3D food printing market which might need to search for alternatives that will give their food that lush red color.

Designer: Revo Foods

The ripple effect of the FDA’s decision extends to various design disciplines, including those that use food dyes for printing or crafts. However, this transition also offers a silver lining, prompting a reevaluation of synthetic dyes and encouraging the pursuit of safer alternatives. It challenges designers to rethink their approach to color and materials, presenting an opportunity for innovation, creativity, and a greater awareness of sustainability in this matter.

A Palette of Possibilities: Exploring Natural Alternatives

The ban on Red Dye No. 3 highlights broader concerns about synthetic dyes. Red Dye No. 40, for example, has been associated with ADHD, raising questions about the safety of consuming chemicals in small doses over time. And it’s not just red that’s the culprit, as other color dyes have also been put under scrutiny for just as long.

This growing awareness has fueled interest in natural alternatives that try to avoid the fundamental cause of the problem: the synthetic nature of these compounds that have toxic effects on humans and animals, no matter how small. And for these, we only need to look to Mother Nature’s own dyes for the answer, leading researchers and scientists to test different sources, including some rather odd ones.

  • Betacyanins – plant-based and vegan-friendly color solutions from red beet roots.
  • Anthocyanins – water-soluble pigments that appear in fruits and vegetables like sweet potato or red cabbage.
  • Carmine – color pigments extracted from the crushed scale insect bodies.

With the exception of the third alternative, many people probably wouldn’t mind getting their colors from plants and fruits, unless they’re very particular about the kind of red they want. Depending on the exact mixture, these natural alternatives might not have that same bright cherry red hue of the Red No. 3 dye, making them poor substitutes when it comes to visual impact.

They also have different applications, unlike the generic flexibility of this banned dye. Some, like Carmine, are better for cosmetics but not for art, while Betacyanins are a poor choice for heat-processed foods. Just like plastic, these more natural materials are harder and costlier to make because of their novelty and low demand. Further research is needed to understand their limitations in non-food applications, ensuring they meet the diverse needs of designers across industries.

Shades of Carmine

The FDA’s decision serves as a wake-up call, urging us to reconsider what we consume and the materials we use in design. This ban underscores the urgent need for natural, sustainable, and safer alternatives to synthetic food dyes. The exploration of natural dyes presents an exciting opportunity for designers to innovate and push the boundaries of traditional design practices. By embracing these alternatives, designers can create products that are not only visually appealing but also safer and more sustainable.

The Designer’s Challenge: Navigating a New Landscape

Designers play a crucial role in shaping the future of product aesthetics. As the FDA’s ban on Red Dye No. 3 takes effect, designers must explore creative solutions and innovative materials. This shift presents an opportunity to redefine design standards and prioritize consumer safety.

The ban on Red Dye No. 3 challenges designers to think outside the box and push the boundaries of traditional design practices. By exploring new materials and techniques, designers can create products that are not only visually stunning but also safer and more sustainable.

As designers navigate this new landscape, they have the opportunity to lead the way in creating products that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible. This shift presents an exciting opportunity for innovation and creativity, as designers work to redefine the future of design.

Very few people probably have problems thinking about what to use a drinking glass for after the party’s over. Most will probably just put them away in some cupboard or closet until the next social gathering requires their use. It’s definitely not a big deal, but maybe you have, at one point in time, stopped to wonder if that’s really all there is to drinkware. As it turns out, it isn’t.

Trying to redefine drinking glass design by giving it a second job, these simple-looking vessels serve different functions depending on whether it’s right side up or upside down. A drinkware when upright and a candle holder when flipped, the design gives the glass something to do when it’s not in use. And no, that doesn’t mean putting a tealight candle inside the glass, making it unhygienic and potentially damaging.

Designer: Traga

There are probably some instances when candles are indeed placed inside these small drinking glasses, which can actually look enchanting and romantic to some extent. That, however, also means the end of the glass’ life as a drinking glass, which unnecessarily limits its function to one or the other. You can have both, as proven by this rather unusual drinkware. And the solution isn’t even that complicated.

At first glance, the Podio Cup looks nothing out of the ordinary, just a small drinking glass with an uncharacteristically tall base. That base, however, turns out to be hollow, so that when you flip the glass over, it becomes a vessel of its own. It’s a small container, of course, but just the perfect size for a tealight candle. Simple and elegant, it gives the glasses added value even when you don’t have guests over.

These glasses also have another somewhat hidden talent. You can stack the glasses together while upside down, and the sides will never touch each other because of the small gap between each glass. This prevents them from scratching each other while also creating an eye-catching totem-like arrangement that will surely get your guests talking. You never have to keep and hide these glasses away ever again.

The glasses are crafted using borosilicate, which makes them perfect for both cold juices and espresso shots as well. The bodies are clear and completely transparent, but the bases have different tinted color options. The latter gives an even more interesting visual with a flame, as the candlelight gets mixed with the colors, setting a different mood depending on which glass is used.

I am an avid coffee drinker but sometimes, having too much in one day affects my sleep cycle. So one of my challenges for myself this 2025 is to replace some of my coffee with tea. I prefer the loose leaf tea for the most natural way of drinking it but oftentimes, I use tea bags. These tea bags are mostly paper and chemical based and they are the most common available in the market. Luckily, there are some brands and product designers that are looking into more sustainable ways of packaging these tea leaves while retaining and even enhancing the flavor of the actual tea.

Leaf Vein Tea is a different kind of tea packaging that is 100% biodegradable and also pretty unique. From the name itself, it uses veins from leaves to create the tea bag wherein you put your tea leaves. The inspiration for the design are the green mountains of the Yunnan province in China. The packaging is made from the aforementioned rubber leaf veins and the external packaging uses mulberry bark paper and tea leaf waste. This means that after using the tea bag, you can guiltlessly dispose of it since the entire thing is biodegradable.

Designer: Cole Studio (Shanghai) for Yunnan Jiang Fang

Because the packaging uses this natural vein pattern, it is able to give the tea drinker optimal filtration of the tea leaves without losing any of the taste and essence of what you’re drinking. The mulberry bark paper on the external packaging even adds a subtle tea scent so it engages your olfactory sense as well. You can also mimic the feel of picking tea leaves from the plant by picking up the leaf-shaped bag and putting it in your cup of hot water.

Aside from its eco-friendly materials and design, it also gives off a very aesthetic vibe. If you like posting on social media what you’re drinking, having a leaf floating in your transparent tea cup looks very pretty and Instagram-ready. Hopefully we get even more biodegradable and aesthetic packaging not just for tea but even for coffee and other drinks soon.

I know next to nothing about skateboards, except that one (and only) time I got on one, I fell down and nearly broke something. So after that incident, I was relegated to just watching my neighbors skate and over the years would occasionally catch it on YouTube for some tournaments. I see the boards though as pretty cool, especially the ones that have been artistically designed (which is most of them).

Designer: Zieta Studio

If you’re like me and you think skateboards are cool, particularly the longboards, then you’ll be interested in this piece called Bolid. Well, it’s not a longboard that you can actually use but rather, it uses the design of one as the basis for this structural mirror. This was originally designed for Italian brand Pirelli but soon you can have one in your home if you want to display a longboard that stands as an actual mirror.

Bolid is made with the FiDU proprietary technology, using sheets of steel to create your desired longboard shape. So you have an oblong and dynamic shaped object with two versions. The silver innox version has aluminum trucks and white wheels while the emerald green finish has green or black wheels. You can mount it on your wall or just place it against the wall, although the latter will have the risk of it falling over and maybe breaking. So it’s safer to just have it permanently fixed on your wall or you can just leave it lying around and hope that no one would think that they can actually skate on it.

While it’s a sculptured mirror, you probably won’t be able to use it as a full mirror given its shape and the polished surface finish. Sure there’s still some reflection that you can look at but you best stick to your actual mirror if you’re trying to put on make up or you want to look at your entire fit. This is more of an aesthetic piece of furniture for those that want to have longboards propped against their walls just for the vibe. Even the product photos show Bolid as more of a piece of art that you can display in your home rather than an actual mirror. As they say, this design actually defies classification.

AI-powered self-watering indoor planter makes growing greens all too easy

]]>

Let’s face it: many of us would want to grow our own flowers and herbs but are afraid to do so because we don’t have a green thumb. In fact, some might even have the opposite of a green thumb, seemingly cursed to kill any vegetative life they handle. Of course, it’s really just a matter of knowing the right thing to do at the right time, which is harder to accomplish when plants only show visible signs when they’re almost dead.

That’s where everyone’s favorite AI comes in, taking the guesswork out of the equation. That’s the value that this deceptively plain and simple plastic pot tries to bring, making the act of growing indoor plants so easy, that you might even feel you’re not the one doing the work at all.

Designer: LeafyPod

Most of us were probably taught as early as grade school that plants need soil, water, and sunlight to grow. We would only learn too late, like when coming home to a dead plant, that this is an oversimplified explanation. Plants need the right amount of light, temperature, humidity, and soil moisture to thrive, and that’s not even considering how different plants will have different requirements.

Rather than overwhelming us poor humans with all that data, the LeafyPod simplifies life by utilizing a product that thrives on data: AI. Based on the plant you selected to grow, the smart indoor planter will learn how the plant responds to water, evaluate the quality of the soil, and automatically water the plant as needed to keep it in top condition. All you need to do is to refill the reservoir every month or so.

It might almost feel like you’ve totally automated the act of growing a plant, which in some sense, also takes out the joy from the activity, but there are still some things you do need to do by hand. You’ll need to move the plant to a better-lit area when it needs lighting since it doesn’t come with its own grow light. You’ll also have to replace the filter every few months, but as you might have guessed, the LeafyPod planter will be the one to tell you when to do all these.

The AI-powered LeafyPod is definitely a powerful tool that takes out the drudgery of growing plants indoors, but you might also want to ask yourself first why you’re trying to grow them in the first place. If all you want is an easy way to have beautiful living foliage or fresh herbs at home, then this indoor planter might be right for you. If, on the other hand, you actually want to experience the adventure of growing plants, this could just be a stepping stone in getting you started on a more earnest learning process.
